Amazing crowd, Dauphin takes series lead

The Dauphin Kings have taken a 1-0 lead in their first-round series with the Swan Valley Stampeders.

Backed by an offensive outburst in the second period with three goals, the Kings earned a decisive 5-1 win against their Parkland rival.

After winning the defensive scoring race in the regular season, Colby Jaquet scored on the man advantage 11:38 into the first period. In the second, Dauphin went to town. Nolan Wickham, Garrett Hrechka and Owen Wareham all netted second period goals as Dauphin opened up a 4-0 lead after 40 minutes.

In the third, Dauphin and Swan Valley traded goals with Jaquet scoring into an empty net and Nicolas Roussel scored on a breakaway to bring the Stampeders within three goals at that point; however, that was as close as they would get.

Carson Cherepak was solid in net as per usual as he turned away 27 of the 28 shots he faced in the win.

The two teams will return to Credit Union Place on Tuesday night for game two of the series. You can hear that game on HockeyTV with Darnell Duff or on 730CKDM, also with Darnell Duff.

King notes:

  • Dauphin scored two goals while a man up in the game and went 2-for-4 overall on the man advantage and they were a perfect 0-for-2 on the penalty kill
  • In his first junior hockey playoff game, Jayden Jubenvill rose to the occasion with two assists, one of which was an coast-to-coast rush that was finished off by Dauphin’s Garrett Hrechka.
  • Dating back to the regular season, Dauphin is now 8-1 against the Stampeders
  • Mathew Rathbone took a vicious high stick and left the game; however, he did return and he finished the night with one assist and looked very solid
