THE LOCAL LION – PART 5

Sometimes all you need to achieve success is a chance, an open door.

Being drafted or protected by an MJHL team is like having someone open a door for you. Its an opportunity, and for Kings prospect, Bradyn Smelski, he’s looking at making the most of his opportunities.

“We selected Bradyn with our 3rd pick in the 2014 MJHL Bantam Draft.” stated Kings Assistant Coach/Assistant GM Marc Berry. “We knew he had a very good work ethic and a good skill set. He played this last season for the Dauphin Clippers High School Team and we only got to see him a couple of times. Our Spring Camp rolled around and we knew we’d get a chance to watch Bradyn compete there and he left a very good impression. His skating is stronger and he’s added a physical element to his game. This guy has worked his butt off to get better and it hasn’t gone unnoticed. It’s great to see a player take advantage of an opportunity like that. Bradyn knows he’ll have to continue to work hard and develop, but he’s on the right path.”

Smelski was a point a game player for the Clippers last season, scoring eight goals and adding ten assists in eighteen games.

“It would be a dream!” said Smelski when asked what it would mean to him to be a Dauphin King. “I’ve been working hard to be where I’m at and when I got drafted it was one of the highlights of my life!”

“I want to play Junior A hockey. And the fact that Dauphin is my hometown, where I grew up, it would be an honour to be a King.”

Being from Dauphin, Smelski has been able to see a lot of different Kings over the past few years. One player stands out to him in particular.

“My favourite player growing up was Dauphin’s own, Ryan Dreger. He scored so many goals, he was a team player and was just a great guy to be around.”

Bradyn enjoys working out and training. In the off season he enjoys golfing and lacrosse. Smelski will be following this years Stanley Cup Final closely as his favourite player is Steven Stamkos. His favourite team is the Ottawa Senators. “That’s My Boy” is currently Smelski’s favourite movie. His colour of choice is blue and his favourite number is 15.
