Owen Wareham played the role of hero on Sunday afternoon as he scored the overtime winner against the Winkler Flyers. Pair that big goal with a great defensive game and he’s this week’s first star in the Parkland Source for Sports Three Stars of the Week.
1st Star: Owen Wareham
It was his second goal of the season, and it was his biggest, without a doubt. On the power play late in Sunday’s contest against the Flyers, Wareham stepped into a shot from the top of the slot and beat Aidan Comeau clean.
“It was nice to get that one, I don’t score a lot but it’s always nice,” said Wareham. “Very pleased the team was able to get the job done.”
Serving as the team’s captain this year, Wareham is a leader on and off the ice and he’s a great guy in general. With elite talent, Wareham will look to show off his stuff at the league’s Top Prospects Showcase which takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday.
2nd Star: Deepkaran Hans
A player that should be heading to the showcase is certainly Deepkaran Hans; unfortunately, he isn’t.
In his final year as a junior hockey player, Hans just continues to score for his new team. With his goal on Sunday, he has now scored eight times in 12 games and he’s averaging more than a point-per-game with five assists on top of his eight markers.
Hans is now tied with Wareham for the seventh most points on the team heading into a weekend set with the Winnipeg Freeze.
3rd Star: Marko Belak
He was outstanding in his first two games with the Kings in wins over Virden and OCN. That win against OCN had some added flex to it as it was on the road at the Gordon Lathlin Memorial Centre, an arena that is very hard to play in for any visiting team.
He then had an off game against Waywayseecappo but he rebounded very nicely on Sunday.
He turned away 24 shots in Dauphin’s win over Winkler. Belak is 3-2 with a .924 save percentage and a 2.18 goals-against average.
Season-long standings:
Five points are up for grabs for the first star each week, three points go for the second star and a single point is up for grabs for the third star
