PORTAGE, MB - The Dauphin Kings started late and got in to penalty trouble early and it once again cost them, this time in a 5-2 loss to the Portage Terriers Sunday night.
The Terriers scored just 30 seconds into the affair and didn't look back. Baron Thompson (1) would even things up for Dauphin less than five minutes in. After that the Terriers were treated to numerous power plays, including a lengthy 5-on-3. They scored two more times to close out the frame.
In the second period Dauphin had loads of chances, but lack of scoring on their power play couldn't get them back into the game.
The third period, and most of the night, the Kings were solid 5-on-5 but Portage continued to get power plays and put Dauphin away. Kadin Ilott (1) got the Kings to 4-2 on the man advantage but Portage pulled away late for the victory.
The Kings ended the night 1 for 11 on the power play, but a could chunk of their chances came very late in the game when things were already decided. Portage was 3 for 7. They had three five on three opportunities.
Both goalies made 23 saves Sunday. Levi Mitchell turned aside 23 of 28 shots while the Kings had 25 shots on goal.
Now the series shifts to Dauphin as the Kings will look to continue their strong play at Credit Union Place as of late. Game three of the series happens Tuesday at 7:30pm!
