Stampeders Double Kings 6-3

SWAN RIVER, MB - The Dauphin Kings got into penalty trouble and couldn't recover in a 6-3 loss to the Swan Valley Stampeders on opening night in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.

Dauphin got off to a good start Friday night, getting the game's first goal and going up 1-0 after the opening 20 minutes despite having to kill off three man advantages. Nakodan Greyeyes (1) scored the first goal of the regular season for the Kings.

In the second Swan Valley got on the board, scoring four times while the Kings tallied just once. Leeam Tivers (1) had the Dauphin goal. The score after 40 was 4-2 for Swan Valley.

The third period saw both teams take penalties. The Kings would make it 5-3 after Nakodan Greyeyes notched his second of the evening. It appeared the Kings had made it a 5-4 contest but a quick whistle helped the Stampeders maintain a 5-3 advantage. They then went up the ice and scored on the next shift to make it 6-3.

Matthias Smith started and ended the game in net for the Kings, turning away 28 of the 34 shots he faced. His team had 35 on the Swan Valley goal. A good chunk of them came in the last half of the game.

Power plays saw both teams have seven on Friday. Early in the third period Dauphin had had just two man advantages while Swan Valley saw six. That total would eventually even out. The Stampeders were the only team to score on the power play.

The two teams will now head south and wrap up their home-and-home set Saturday in Dauphin for the Kings Dauphin Clinic Pharmacy Home Opener. Game time is pegged for 7:30pm!
