DAUPHIN, MB - The Dauphin Kings stayed with it and eventually broke through in a 3-0 win over the Virden Oil Capitals on opening night in the MJHL.
The opening two periods saw lots of shots, but no goals. It even saw a brief goalie change for the Kings. After Cole Sheffield suffered some equipment issues Victor Larin stepped in and stopped all four shots he faced before his counterpart returned.
Dauphin did all their scoring after the five minute mark of the third. First Ashton Paul tallied on a shot in the slot. That was followed by a Power Play marker from Jack Bechard, who found a rebound and buried it. Then Aiden Murray sealed it for the Kings with an empty netter late in the frame.
Sheffield stopped all 33 shots he faced for his first shut out of the season and second in a row if you count that exhibition victory last week against the Oil Capitals in a shootout. The Kings had 35 shots on Friday.
Dauphin ended the night 1 for 3 on the man advantage and 3 for 3 on the Penalty Kill.
The win puts the Kings to 1-0-0-0 on the season and they'll look to their Assiniboine College Home Opener on Saturday at Credit Union Place. Tailgate Party begins at 5:30pm with puck drop at 7:30pm. Be sure to be in your seats early for player introductions!
