DAUPHIN, MB - It was a night of firsts for the Dauphin Kings as the club picked up their first victory of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League season, a 3-2 win over the Portage Terriers.
In the opening period the Kings came out strong, out shooting the Terriers 14-9 and being rewarded with Jaxon Heeney picking up his first goal of the young season.
The second period had things even out a little on the shot clock as the teams both put up 10 shots on goal. Jacob Karran got his first of the year for Dauphin and that was followed up by Kyle Oleksiuk's second in as many contests.
The third period saw the Kings get into a little penalty trouble, but the team's Penalty Kill bent but didn't break as it gave up one man advantage goal in the frame. Portage out shot Dauphin 15-2 in the third but Matt Kustra stood tall between the pipes.
When it came to total shots the Terriers put 34 on Kustra while the Kings fired 27 on the Portage goal. Power Plays had each team scoring once on the man advantage.
The victory improves the Kings' record to 1-5-0 on the season, but things won't get any easier as the team gets set to welcome another tough opponent in the Steinbach Pistons on Friday. Opening face off at Credit Union Place is 7:30pm!
