Oil Caps Edge Kings

DAUPHIN, MB – The Dauphin Kings put forth a much better effort Saturday night but it wasn’t enough in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Virden Oil Capitals at Credit Union Place.

The Kings jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first two periods. Keaton Leininger notched the first Dauphin goal, his ninth of the season in the early stages of the opening period. Then in the first three minutes of the second Matt Bartel fired up his third of the campaign to bump Dauphin ahead 2-0.

Virden battled back in the second and third, eventually tying things up at the 12:10 mark of the final period.

The two clubs went to overtime where they traded chances. Then the Oil Capitals gained their fifth power play of the night and scored on it to take the win.

Special Teams had the Kings ending the night 0 for 2 on the Power Play while Virden finished 1 for 5.

Brandon Holtby stood tall but took the loss, making 54 saves on 57 shots. Dauphin launched 22 shots on Virden’s goal.

The loss moves the Kings to 7-19-5 on the season. The club does gain a point and moves a little bit up in the standings. They’ll return to action at the MJHL Showcase on Tuesday when they tangle with the Selkirk Steelers at the MTS Iceplex in Winnipeg.
