LOCAL LION PART 9

For this week’s Local Lion, we head west  down Highway 5 and focus in on Roblin’s Braydee Prokopchuk.

At the 2013 MJHL Bantam Draft in Portage the Dauphin Kings had five picks in the six round draft. In the 4th round, using their 3rd pick, the King’s selected Braydee Prokopchuk.

“We were surprised that Braydee was still available to us with the 44th pick overall.” stated Kings Assistant Coach Marc Berry.
“He’s a player that has good size and moves pretty good. There’s a physical element to his game and he can create space for his teammates. His offensive skill set is still developing, but he has a great commitment to the game and a very good work ethic. Braydee has the mental toughness to overcome adversity and that ability is valuable to any player.”

Before living in Roblin, Braydee’s family resided in Thompson, MB moving in 2009. When asked who his favourite King was, he was quick to stick to some northern roots.

“(MJHL and Anavet Cup Champion) Matthew Backhouse.” said Prokopchuk. “I always liked watching him and we’re both from Thompson so that connection is there.”

The son of Les Prokopchuk has been a long time Kings fan. Since being drafted by the Kings, Prokopchuk has been putting in the time and working towards putting on a Kings jersey.

“It would mean a lot to me, to play for the Kings” stated Prokopchuk. “Just from growing up in the area, always idolizing the team and watching the success the hockey club has had over the years. Not to mention the fact that its close to home and has a great fan base.”

Away from the rink, Prokopchuk would be described as an outdoorsy type of guy. He likes baseball, golf, lacrosse and basically any type of sport.

“Except soccer.” quipped Prokopchuk. “I’m not a soccer player.”

Prokopchuk’s favorite NHL team is the Pittsburgh Penguins and his favourite player is former Calder Trophy winner, Nathan McKinnon from the Colorado Avalanche. His favourite color is blue and his number of choice is 17. When it comes to movies, Braydee goes with a classic, “The Sandlot”
