Local Lion Part 15

Our latest Local Lion this week is also our newest Local Lion.

This past week the Dauphin Kings finalized a trade with the Portage Terriers and were able to acquire Gilbert Plains product, Evan Gullet. The Kings also received Portage’s 4th round pick in the 2016 MJHL Bantam Draft. Going back to Portage was 99 goaltender Justin Klassen and the King’s 5th round pick next year.

Gullett is a 5.11, 165 lb left handed defenceman. Last season with the Parkland Bantam Rangers, the steady blue liner had 7 points in 31 games.

“Evan is a player that we targeted last year after watching him play with the Parkland Bantam Rangers.” stated Kings Assistant Coach Marc Berry. “He has good size and sees the ice well. Evan is a dedicated player. He has a great work ethic and he’s committed to the game. He comes from a great family and we’re really happy to get him into the Kings organization. He has the potential to be a solid Junior player.”

Evan Gullett and the Dauphin Kings have been connected since the start of Evan’s hockey career. Evan didn’t start to play hockey until he was in the third grade. That year for his 8th Birthday, Evan had his birthday party at a Dauphin Kings game. One of the players in that game was Evan’s cousin Lindsey Gullet, who was a popular player for the Kings in the 2007-2008 season. The fire in Evan was lit.

“It was something that stuck with him.” remembers Carla Gullet, Evan’s mom. “From that point on he was drawn to hockey.”

“Lindsey was definitely my favourite player.” says Evan. “He inspired me. He was a great character player and I wanted to follow in his footsteps. He played the game the right way and it paid off.”

“It would mean a lot to me to be a Dauphin King.” said Gullet. “They have a really good program and I would be able to play close to home. The Kings are a part of our community and I want to be a part of that.”

Away from the arena Evan is a big part of his family’s grain farm. The son of Curt and Carla Gullett can often be seen working in the fields during the off season. He also enjoys hunting and fishing.

Evan’s favourite NHL Team is the Edmonton Oilers. His favourite player is Hall of Famer, Joe Sakic from the Colorado Avalanche. His number of choice is #12 and his favourite colour is purple. If Gullett could tell you the latest movie to go see, it would be the latest “Mission Impossible”
