LOCAL LION PART 10

When asked to describe himself with one word, Dauphin’s Vincent Hughes used the word “Hitter”

“It’s fitting.” said Dauphin Assistant Coach Marc Berry. “Vinny likes to roam around out there and run into people. He creates space for himself and his teammates. He’s got strong legs and keeps himself balanced. It’s effective.”

Vincent Hughes is one of the Kings auto-protected players this season. Hughes spent last season with the Parkland Rangers AAA Bantam team. In 16 games, Hughes picked up two assists along with 22 penalty minutes.

“Vinny is an energy type of player.” said Berry “He is a good, strong skater and can play forward or defence. He is grooming himself to be a responsible player and he takes pride in a 200 ft game. You always need guys that will do the dirty work and play in the hard areas of the ice. We feel Vinny could develop into that type of player.”

Being from Dauphin, Hughes got the chance to watch the Kings regularly. His favourite King growing up was another Dauphin product, Luke Stokotelny.

“He was an all around hard worker.” said Hughes “With a scoring touch.”

Having grown up in the City of Sunshine, playing for the Kings someday would have special meaning for Hughes.

“It’s local, and they have a history of winning.” stated Hughes “It would mean a lot to me to be a part of it. I would be playing for my hometown team. The Kings also have had a lot of players move on and play at a higher level. That’s something I’d like to do.”

Vincent is the youngest of three and has two older sisters, Mary and Kaitlyn. Away from the arena, the son of Ron Hughes and Valerie McInnes would be described as “Outdoorsy”. He enjoys fishing, hunting, quading and camping. Hunting orange is Hughes’ favourite colour. His favourite NHL team is the Calgary Flames and his favourite player is Victor Hedman. The latest of the Fast and Furious Movies, “Fast and Furious 7” is his current movie of choice.
