DAUPHIN, MB - The Dauphin Kings have opened up a six point gap atop the MJHL's West Division following a 4-1 win over the Oil Capitals in Virden Saturday night.
The win is the Kings' third in a row and puts them six points ahead for first in the division and they also have a game in hand on Norman.
The opening 20 minutes saw the Kings get off to a great start. Ethan Williment (9) scored for the Kings just under a minute into the affair. The Kings (3) and Oil Capitals (2) would have power play opportunities later in the period but both failed to score.
In the middle frame Havryil Simchuk continued his solid play with his 4th of the year. He stole the puck at his own blue line and walked in on a breakaway to make it 2-0 Kings. Late in the period the Oil Capitals would make it 2-1.
Finally in the third the Kings were able to regain their two goal lead when Josh Schmidt walked in alone for his 3rd of the season in the early stages of the frame. Cayden Glover would ice things with his 22nd of the season on a penalty shot late.
Both teams failed to score on the man advantage Saturday. Dauphin was 0 for 4 while Virden was 0 for 5.
Bryson Yaschyshyn made his second start as a Dauphin King and was solid in the win stopping 21 of 22 shots. He is now 2-0 since joining Dauphin. The Kings had 33 shots on Virden's goal Saturday.
Dauphin is now 18-6-1-0 on the year.
The schedule will get very interesting for the West Division over the next few weeks as the Kings go to The Pas to play Norman three times before the Christmas break. They'll start that stretch when they go north on Tuesday. The Kings are back on home ice Saturday when they host Steinbach. It's also Hockey Card Night. Puck drop Tuesday in Norman is 7:00pm. On Saturday it's 7:30pm at Credit Union Place!
