DAUPHIN, MB - The Dauphin Kings picked up a big two road points in The Pas Tuesday night, beating the Blizzard 4-2, their fourth straight win.
The Kings got better as the night went on and now have an eight point advantage atop the MJHL's West Division.
It was a very flat start for the Kings in the opening 20 minutes. Dauphin couldn't get anything going in the first four minutes and struggled to get out of their zone and down the ice. They were out shot 5-0 in the first four minutes. Things would even out after that and then Rylan Gage would score his 7th of the season off a great behind the back pass from Josh Schmidt.
In the second period the Blizzard got a fortunate bounce off the mask of Cole Sheffield when the Kings tried to clear on the penalty kill. Norman's Bouvier would pick up the loose puck and back hand it home to make it 1-1 before the halfway mark of the period. Later in the frame the Kings would repeat their magic in the first, scoring late in the frame when Declan Hoad scored his 4th of the year, catching the Blizzard on a sloppy long change. A good heads up play by Naaman Hofer to move the puck quickly up the ice. Dauphin would take their 2-1 lead to the third.
The final frame saw the Blizzard with ample power play chances to tie things up including a lengthy 5-on-3. They did eventually tie things up but not on the man advantage. Just over a minute later, and near the end of the period again the Kings would retake their lead. Naaman Hofer with a shot that was tipped home by Josh Schmidt for his 4th of the year with less than four minutes to play. Rylan Gage (8) would add an empty netter to seal the deal.
The line of Josh Schmidt, Rylan Gage and Sheldon Shyiak was Dauphin's best Tuesday night.
Cole Sheffield was key in the win for the Kings. In total he stopped 33 shots, but made important saves early on when his team struggled to get going early in the game. Dauphin had 32 shots Tuesday.
The Kings' penalty kill showed why it's ranked atop the MJHL on the road. It went 3 for 4 on the night and stopped Norman's lengthy 5 on 3 in the third period. Dauphin's man advantage was 0 for 2.
Dauphin improves to 19-6-1-0 on the season and are now eight points clear of the Blizzard for first in the West Division with a game in hand. Now the Kings look forward to a big test Saturday when it's another clash of division leaders as the Steinbach Pistons come to town on Hockey Card Night, game time is 7:30pm at Credit Union Place!
