WINKLER, MB - For the first time in five years the Dauphin Kings came away with two points in Winkler, beating the Flyers 4-1 Saturday night.
The game didn't start out great for the Kings as they fell behind 1-0 when Winkler scored on the game's first man advantage. However Dauphin got better as the night went on.
In the middle frame the Kings tied things up when Matt Bartel scored his second goal in as many contests, coming out from the corner and pushing one home. After goaltender Brennan Kitchen was run hard by Brett Opperman the Kings seemed to turn things on. In his first game with the club Danny Pion had a goal and an assist including the game winner in the second period, scoring on the five minute major penalty that was given to Opperman for charging.
The two teams went to the third period with Dauphin ahead 2-1. The Kings then added two more, both on the Power Play. The first was from McCullough Park and the second was from Riley Shamray. Like Pion, Shamray had a goal and an assist.
Dauphin's Power Play gave the league's best Penalty Kill trouble Saturday, going 3 for 5. The Flyers were 1 for 5 on the man advantage.
Brennan Kitchen and Justin Anderson shared the win for the Kings. Kitchen stopped 16 of 17 shots while Anderson turned aside all 13 he faced in his unexpected debut between the pipes.
The win improves the Kings' record to 6-21-2 on the season. They'll try and sweep the weekend on Sunday when they take on the Blues in Winnipeg. Game time is 6:30pm!
