Kings sign smooth skating American

As the Dauphin Kings prepare to host their spring camp later this month at Credit Union Place, the organization has once again gone south of the border to sign an American that had plenty of interest from several teams.

The club is pleased to announce that Trey Gnetz has committed to the Kings in time for the 2023-24 season. Hailing from Woodbury, Minnesota, Trey scored twice and added seven assists in 30 games this past season with Cretin-Derham Hall. That is the same school where Marko Belak played and excelled.

When it comes to Gnetz, he is known as an undersized defenseman, but that did not stop him from being one of the top defenders in the state.

A multi-sport athlete, Gnetz comes in at 5’9″ and 165 pounds. Cretin-Derham Hall went 7-2-1 in Suburban East conference play this past season and was 19-11-1 overall.

Andy Kubas is the Kings’ Assistant General Manager and USA Hockey Operations and he says Gnetz size is certainly not an issue.

“His brothers were Division 1 athletes so he has that athletic gene,” said Kubas. “He played at the highest level in Minnesota High School Hockey and games were played in front of a lot of people. He has a great ability to be able to play under the brightest of lights and that’s a great advantage for him.”

When asked about the signing, Doug Hedley, Kings Head Coach & General Manager had this to say.

“We’re looking forward to working with Trey,” said Hedley. “He has a great combination of skill, mobility, and IQ. He adds another dimension to a solid returning core.”

Speaking of the returning core on the back end, Aidan Brook, Anthony Bax, Nicholas Hatton, Sam Boldt, Nolan Wickham, and Marko Bodnarski are all eligible to return.

While Trey understands it will take some time to get used to playing in Canada, he is very excited about the opportunity and he’s ready to get down to business.

“It feels great to get the stress out of the way,” said Gnetz. “Now it’s time to put the work boots on and get ready to battle for a spot. I’m very excited to join the organization, this is just the start.”

Trey will continue to prepare for his move to Dauphin in August and his preparation includes playing baseball throughout the summer months on top of being in the gym.

Dauphin will be hosting an ‘Exposure Camp’ on June 24 and 25 at the Bloomington Ice Garden in Bloomington, Minnesota.
