DAUPHIN, MB - The Dauphin Kings are one point away from clinching top spot in the MJHL's West Division following a 3-1 victory over the Swan Valley Stampeders Saturday night.
The first period was a pretty quiet one. The best chance of the opening frame was Ethan Williment on a breakaway but the Dauphin captain couldn't capitalize.
In the second period the Kings were able to get rolling when Ethan Stewart (9) snapped a wrist shot blocker side off a two on one. The goal came just over a minute in. After that both teams had a Power Play but neither could score.
The final frame saw the Kings get off to another great start. Less than three minutes in Declan Hoad (7) walked over the blue line and snapped home an insurance marker for his team, making it 2-0. Then Ethan Stewart would tally his second of the night and 10th of the year to put the Kings ahead 3-0. Swan Valley would score late to make it 3-1 but that's as close as they'd get.
Cole Sheffield was again solid for the Kings. This time the Dauphin goaltender turned aside 36 of 37 shots. His team had 34.
Special Teams were once again quiet. The Kings had just one Power Play and didn't score on it. Swan Valley had two and were unsuccessful as well.
The win means the Kings are now 36-15-2-1 on the season. They need just one point in their last three games to clinch top spot in the MJHL's West Division.
The Kings now get two days off before their next action on Tuesday when they visit the Waywayseecappo Wolverines for the final time this season. Dauphin and Wayway will play two games in the next week against each other. The Wolverines are fighting for their playoff lives, which means Tuesday's game will be meaningful for both teams. Game time is 7:30pm.
