WINNIPEG, MB - The Dauphin Kings controlled most of Sunday night's contest in Winnipeg, but couldn't seal the deal in a 6-5 loss to the Winnipeg Blues.
Dauphin was never behind in the affair, until inside the last minute. In the first period the Kings came out strong, scoring two and gaining a 2-0 advantage. Danny Pion continued his strong play while Thomas Hansell also got in on the action. The Blues, however, would score two of their own later on to knot things up at two after 20.
In the middle frame the Kings continued to play well and Jacob Karran was rewarded with his second of the season. The marker was the lone one of the period to give Dauphin a 3-2 edge after two periods.
The third period saw the flood gates open for both teams. Wilson Northey and Danny Pion scored for the Kings but the Blues responded both times to get within a goal. With the score at 5-4 Bradyn Smelski took a five minute cross checking penalty which Winnipeg scored on to tie things up. Then with just over 30 seconds to play the Blues would take their only lead of the game, making it 6-5.
Brennan Kitchen suffered the loss in goal. He stopped 24 of 30 shots while his team had 25 on the Winnipeg net.
Dauphin did not score a goal on the Power Play Sunday night while Winnipeg had two.
The Kings won't get much time off before their next action. Dauphin returns to the ice on Tuesday when they entertain the OCN Blizzard at Credit Union Place. Game time is 7:30pm and the sponsor is McMunn & Yates!
