WINKLER, MB - The Dauphin Kings fell asleep for the second half of the opening period Friday night and it cost them in a 5-2 loss to the Winkler Flyers.
The Kings opened the scoring in the first period when Grady Hobbs made a great behind the back pass to Baron Thompson (14) for his first goal since returning from the WHL's Spokane Chiefs. After that it was all Winkler as the Flyers tallied three times to go ahead 3-1 after 20.
The middle frame was an uneventful one with both teams failing to put up any points on the scoreboard.
In the third period the Kings took over and controlled things for the most part. Cole DeKoninck (14) would eventually score for the Kings to get them within one, but a lapse a few minutes later would put Dauphin back down by two. The Flyers would add an empty netter to seal it.
Dauphin had good pressure but did not score on the man advantage Friday. They went 0 for 4 while the Flyers finished 1 for 2.
A well controlled third period by the Kings resulted in them owning the shots Friday. They out shot the Flyers 11-5 in the third and 34-29 overall. Matthias Smith suffered the loss in goal for the Kings.
Dauphin's record slips to 16-12-3-2 on the season. They'll look to bounce back Saturday night when they battle the Flyers in Winkler for the second straight night. Game time is 7:30pm!
