Kings earn a point in tough overtime defeat

The Dauphin Kings came out on Friday night and dominated the first period against the Virden Oil Capitals. But in the end, Dauphin will make the trip back home with just one point.

In what turned out to be a back-and-forth affair, the Oil Capitals got the last punch in as Nolan Chastko scored 44 seconds into overtime to give Virden a 6-5 win.

Blake Boudreau, Deepkaran Hans and Matthew Gough would score for Dauphin in the first as they took a 3-0 lead into the dressing room.

The Oil Capitals would respond in the second with three goals of their own as Colton Miller scored as did Brody Wilson and Naton Miller. Gough would score his second of the game for Dauphin as they still led 4-3 after 40 minutes.

Carter Zalischuk would score his first goal as a King with just about eight minutes left as Dauphin led 5-4. Davis Chorney; however, scored with 78 seconds left to force overtime and Chastko finished it off just 44 seconds in.

Dauphin went 1-for-4 on the power play and are now 4 for their last 42 on the man advantage. Their penalty kill was solid as they went 4-for-5 against the league-leading power play from Virden. Cole Sheffield finished with 34 saves and took the loss.

These same two teams will meet Saturday night at Credit Union Place at 7:30. It’s also Ladies Night and the vendors on the concourse will open at 6:45.
