Kings Dig Deep In Portage, Earn Big Win

DAUPHIN, MB - A short staffed Dauphin Kings team dug deep and grabbed a big two points on the road Saturday night, beating the Portage Terriers 3-2 at Stride Place.

It was the response the coaching staff was looking for after a disappointing loss to Waywayseecappo on Thursday.

For the second straight game the Kings didn't start the game they wanted to, giving up the first goal just 23 seconds in. They would respond though. Cayden Glover won a battle in the Portage crease and potted his 18th of the year to make it 1-1 after 20.

It was the same scenario in the second period except it was the Kings scoring first with the Terriers matching them a few moments later. Cayden Glover's second of the night was his 19th of the season. Heading to the third the Kings had an extended man advantage after a double minor for high sticking was handed to Portage's Funk.

In the third period the Kings used that man advantage to gain the lead. Havryil Simchuk would tip home a nice slider pass from Naaman Hofer for his second of the season. Portage had multiple chances on the man advantage down the stretch but they couldn't do anything with it.

Dauphin's man advantage had numerous chances but only scored once, going 1 for 7 on the night. Portage's power play failed to score on the night, going 0 for 4.

Cole Sheffield posted a strong bounce back game, making 21 saves on 23 shots. Dauphin had 27 shots Saturday night.

The Kings (16-6-1-0) are now two points clear of the Norman Blizzard for first in the West Division. Norman lost to Neepawa on Saturday night. Dauphin will now get a much needed rest for almost a week. A number of players are nursing bumps and bruises. Dauphin won't see their next action until Friday night at Credit Union Place when they take on the Virden Oil Capitals. The game is sponsored by Tim Hortons with puck drop at 7:30pm!
