Kings Come Up Short In Home Opener

DAUPHIN, MB - The Dauphin Kings gave up four power play goals against and it ended up costing them in a 6-4 loss to the Virden Oil Capitals Saturday night.

The Kings' 50th Anniversary Home Opener was no doubt an entertaining back and forth affair with the Kings once in the opening period and then playing catch up the rest of the way.

The first saw Dauphin get goals from Austin Friesen (1) and Riese Gaber (2) with the two clubs ending up tied and two going into the middle frame.

In the second period Virden grabbed a 3-2 advantage before Brendan Arnold (1) tipped in a point shot late in the frame. The Oil Capitals then scored to retake the lead with less than two minutes remaining.

In the third the Kings played strong and tied it up when Jaymes Knee scored his first in the MJHL. Virden, however, would gain another power play opportunity and capitalized. They would then add an empty netter late in the affair to take the tilt 6-4

Matt Kustra made his debut after being acquired in a trade with the OCN Blizzard earlier in the day. He played strong, stopping 27 of the 32 shots he faced while the Kings fired 30 on the Virden goal.

Power Plays had Virden finish the night with four goals while Dauphin had two on the man advantage.

With the season opening weekend now behind them the Dauphin Kings will hit the road next week for three games, it starts in OCN on Tuesday when they visit the Blizzard at 7:00pm. After that Dauphin heads sout to take on Steinbach Friday and Winkler on Saturday.
