VIRDEN, MB – The Dauphin Kings battled back from a 3-1 deficit in the third period to beat the Virden Oil Capitals 4-3 in overtime Saturday night.
The Kings played well all evening when it came to their structure and it eventually paid off.
In the first period Dauphin was first on the board when Kyle Oleksiuk (7) scored on a nice shot in the lower section of the face off circle. Virden responded with two goals later in the frame to take a 2-1 advantage into the second.
The two teams went scoreless in the second period. After Virden took a 3-1 lead in the third it was all Kings in the final 10 minutes. Daniel Chartrand (8) had a night. He had three points with all of them coming in the last portion of the game, including the tying goal. Matthew Greening scored the Kings’ other goal, his eighth of the season.
In overtime Ashton Clark snuck behind the defence and scored the winner on a breakaway. It was his 14th of the campaign with Chartrand and Riley Shamray picking up assists. Both Clark and Greening had two points Saturday.
Matteo Esposito was excellent for the Kings on the night. He stopped 49 of the 52 shots he faced while Dauphin launched 30 shots on the Virden net.
Special Teams saw the Kings go 0 for 2 on the Power Play and 2 for 3 on the Penalty Kill.
The win snaps Dauphin’s five game losing skid. The club will play their final contest of 2016 Sunday (6:00pm) against the Selkirk Steelers at Credit Union Place.
