WINKLER, MB - The Dauphin Kings ran into a hot goaltender Saturday night and things didn't end well in a 4-1 loss to the Winkler Flyers.
The first 20 minutes were penalty filled as the Kings were shorthanded four times but they held the Flyers off the scoresheet when it came to the club's man advantage. Winkler, however, scored two goals in the opening 20 minutes to go ahead 2-0.
There was no scoring in the second period but both teams had a lot of chances.
In the final frame the Flyers added two more before the Kings broke through in the final minute. Ian Briscoe notched his first of the season with Kyle Oleksiuk & Jaymes Knee drawing the assists.
In the end the Flyers out shot the Kings 44-27. Brennan Kitchen suffered the loss in net for Dauphin. Of those 27 shots about 10 were excellent scoring chances for the Kings but Winkler goalie Troy Martyniuk played extremely well for his club. Dauphin also hit two crossbars in the third, both by Mason Fischer.
Dauphin's Penalty Kill continues to be excellent as of late. It went 7 for 7 Saturday night after going 5 for 5 against Portage's top ranked unit on Friday. The Kings' lone goal came on the man advantage Saturday night.
Now the Kings get a significant break before returning to action as the MJHL shifts its attention the showcase with the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. It gets started early next week. Dauphin Kings Trainer Devin Atkin and forward Dustin Mozdzen will represent the club at the event in Regina.
The Kings' next contest comes on Friday when they host the Neepawa Natives for Parent & Pride Night. The game is sponsored by Parkland Source for Sports and goes down at 7:30pm!
