Chapter 3: Quinten Fisk
Dauphin Kings fans got to see a small sample size of what Quinten Fisk could bring to the junior table last year.
He played six regular-season games with his hometown junior team and two playoff games as the team advanced to the Turnbull Cup final. There were signs of brilliance for the star from Dauphin.
He's now back with the Kings for his first full season.
"Playing at the end of last year helped a lot with my game, getting that experience," said Fisk. "Especially in the playoffs, that was big for me. It made the transition to this year much easier, I fit in with the pace, and know what it takes."
Fisk is hometown born and raised. He never left Dauphin and made a quick rise up the ranks as one of the most dominant local players in recent years. He played in the minor hockey system before playing two years with the Parkland U15 Rangers. He then transitioned to the U18 program, where he played another 92 games over two seasons.
"It was unreal. Four years with the organization, it's an incredible program to be a part of," offered Fisk. "They helped me develop a ton. The jump from the first year of U18 to my second year shows that progression."
In his first year with the U18 program, Quinten scored nine times and had 17 points. Last year, he exploded. Fisk led the team with 29 goals and 62 points. He averaged 1.29 points per game and finished in a tie for 12th in league scoring. He was a multiple-time player of the week and put on a show for the fans.
"Yeah, it felt great. It showed the work I put in the offseason between my first year of U18 and second really paid off," continued Fisk. "Me and my linemates really clicked that and that helped. We were winning games, it was a really fun year, which motivated me to play better."
Fisk had one more year of U18 eligibility, but he decided to go the junior route, and he's certainly made the most of it. Fisk is three games into his first full season of junior with the Kings, and his line has been one of the most impressive to watch. Fisk is on a line with fellow Dauphin star Luke Myhre and rookie Kale Pratte. The tremendous young guns have combined for nine points.
Their work ethic allows them to take over shifts.
"Yeah, it's unreal. I've played with Luke before, but I just met Kale this year," offered Fisk. "It's pretty cool how fast we've clicked, I don't think I've ever clicked with linemates that quickly. We got put together one day at practice and ever since, we've been playing well. We have great chemistry and they're great players, so it's easy to play with them."
Down 1-0 against Neepawa last Saturday, Rylan Gage tied the game late in the second. That set the stage for Fisk. With just more than six minutes left in the game, Fisk scored his first Manitoba Junior Hockey League goal. Not only was it his first as a King, but it was also the game-winner, as Dauphin held on for a 2-1 victory.
His first goal, his first winner, and in front of his family and friends at Credit Union Place, what a moment for the 17-year-old star.
"Yeah, that was pretty cool," continued Fisk. "Luke gave me a great saucer pass and the goalie stopped me on a partial breakaway. I stuck with it and banged in the rebound. It was an unreal feeling, one I won't forget. Scoring that goal in that moment and it being all at home, such a cool feeling."
The Kings won't play again until Tuesday when they head up north to play the Swan Valley Stampeders. As of this posting, Dauphin is tied for first place in the MGEU West Division. Dauphin has looked outstanding in their past three games, all victories
"Game one is an example. We took a tough loss, but came back the next night and won 7-0," commented Fisk. "Our group just has no quit in us. We all want to be there winning. Everyone is clicking right now, we have a great group."
Quinten says he approaches every day with an opportunity to improve and show what he can do. He never takes anything for granted. Whether it's a workout, practice, or a game, Fisk comes to the office with his work hat on and something to prove.
He has certainly proven that he can play at the junior level, and he's only 17 years old.
